Pune, India – July 2025:
The Guardian Giripremi Institute of Mountaineering (GGIM) proudly announces that its flagship Diploma in Mountaineering has been officially shortlisted for the prestigious UIAA Mountain Protection Award 2025 – a moment of immense pride for Indian mountaineering and the global adventure community.
This international honor, supported by global technology leader Lenovo, celebrates pioneering initiatives dedicated to mountain environmental protection, sustainable practices, and the promotion of responsible adventure activities worldwide.
From a highly competitive pool of 20 finalists representing 19 countries, GGIM’s Diploma in Mountaineering stands as a beacon of excellence — the only Indian program to secure a place on this coveted shortlist.
The UIAA Mountain Protection Award (MPA), established in 2013, has become one of the most respected recognitions for environmental responsibility in mountain regions. GGIM’s inclusion in the MPA 2025 reflects years of innovation, dedication, and a deep-rooted commitment to sustainable mountaineering education.
GGIM’s Diploma in Mountaineering, conducted in academic collaboration with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), offers India’s most comprehensive mountaineering curriculum.
The program is unique because it:
Through field expeditions, clean-up drives, and conservation-focused modules, students emerge not only as capable climbers but also as guardians of the mountains.
This milestone is the result of tireless efforts by GGIM’s faculty members, mentors, and support staff. The recognition also stands as a tribute to the unwavering backing from SPPU and NIM, whose collaboration has elevated the program to global standards.
Speaking on this honor, GGIM’s leadership remarked: “This shortlisting is already a win for Indian mountaineering. It proves that when skill, passion, and environmental responsibility come together, we can create world-class programs that inspire change.”
Inspiration for India: Encourages young Indian mountaineers to embrace both technical skill and environmental responsibility.
While the final results of the UIAA Mountain Protection Award 2025 are yet to be announced, this shortlisting itself is a historic moment for GGIM and India’s mountaineering community. It represents not only educational excellence but also India’s growing voice in global mountain conservation efforts.
With the blessings of the mountains, the institute moves forward with optimism and pride. Regardless of the final outcome, this achievement marks a new chapter in India’s mountaineering history.
