On the morning of 9th June, 9 of Giripremi’s young mountaineers set their foot on the ‘dream mountain’ – Mt. Shivling which is located in Tapovan, Uttarakhand in the Western Garhwal Himalayas, India. This victorious moment also marked Giripremi’s silver jubilee year !
Giripremi’s successful expedition to this peak marked the first indian civilian expedition to this technically challenging peak.
Mt Shivling is perched in the Gangotri valley of Garhwal Himalayas at the snout of the Gangotri glacier.
Its stands at a height of 6543 m
Mt. Shivling is known for its unique conical shape due to which it also earned the name of ‘India’s Matterhorn’
Shivling was first ascended on 3 June 1974 by the ITBP team comprising of Hukam Singh, Laxman Singh, Ang Tharkey, Pemba Tharkey and Pasang Sherpa
The mountain was initially said to have no feasible route by a German expedition led by R. Schwarzgruber due to its steepness and possibility of falling seracs
This peak has a success rate of only 50%
Mt. Shivling poses challenges such as steep routes, avalanches and its 300ft high ice wall.
Peaks such as Meru, Thalay Sagar and Bhagirathi surround Mt. Shivling
